In recognition of this year’s Compost Awareness Week (8 to 14 May), Veolia the recycling and waste partner of Southwark Council are giving away five compost bins every day for the whole week. The giveaway is taking place from Monday 8 May at the Reuse and Recycling Centre off Old Kent Road and is open to Southwark residents only.
Since April last year, Southwark parents have taken the plunge and requested more free real nappy trial packs than ever before. Across the borough this 55% increase in demand represents over 4% of new parents, in the borough, that opted to try real nappies and get their free trial pack. It may not sound like much, however if only 70% of those parents continued to use real nappies they will have helped divert a mighty 48* tonnes of nappy waste from the general waste stream in one year, the weight equivalent of three and a half refuse trucks.
Seven university halls around the borough are taking part in a new trial which aims to substantially improve the amount of waste that students recycle across the borough.

Over 850 visitors attended the Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility’s ‘Wonder day’, which opened its doors for its annual event on Saturday. The event which is part of the Open House Weekend, was deemed a ‘quirky day out’ by Time Out magazine, provided a rare insight into the fascinating journey waste takes to become either recycled or turned into a green energy resource.

Veolia, the recycling and waste partners of Southwark Council, installed bee hives last spring so that the honey would be ready for the up and coming annual Wonder Day taking place on Saturday 17 September. The delicious honey can be tasted on the day so that visitors can try and enjoy some freshly harvested ‘Old Kent Honey’.

On the day there will be tours of the facility so residents can learn first-hand how their recyclables and black bag waste are turned into new green products and energy. There will also be a host of interactive exhibits, games and fun to entertain the whole family.

Six bee hives have been installed at the Southwark recycling and waste facility to increase biodiversity at the site and positively impact the local environment. The facility which is situated on Old Kent Road is run by Veolia, the recycling and waste partner of Southwark Council, who plan to sell the honey to raise money for their charity partner FoodCycle.

The Southwark EnviroGrant scheme relaunches for its sixth year, offering community groups and schools the opportunity to be awarded up to £1000 for environmental projects that enrich the local area. Projects that help to reduce, reuse and recycle waste are particularly welcomed.
