Recycle Week 2015: Southwark celebrates 8,000 books donated to reuse charity

Southwark Council and its recycling and waste partner, Veolia, are celebrating a fantastic 8000 books donated by local residents to the charity READ International since the scheme started a year ago.

Southwark Council and Veolia launched a book recycling scheme with READ International to celebrate last year’s Recycle Week in 2014. Now a year on, Southwark residents have donated an impressive 8,000 books to the charity which have been a tremendous support to communities in Africa, where the revenue created from reselling or recycling the books has been used to build libraries for children in Tanzania.

Residents are encouraged to celebrate this year’s Recycle Week from 22nd to 28th June, by donating unwanted books to Southwark’s Reuse and Recycling Centre on Devon St, London, SE15 1AL. In line with this year’s theme of ‘recycling around the home’, if you don’t have any books there are still plenty of materials you can recycle at home such as paper, cardboard, glass, tins, cans, tetra paks, food cartons, plastic bottles and more. Away from home there are recycling bring banks located all around the borough which accept items such as batteries, small electrical goods, textiles, DVDs, videos, shoes and more, which cannot be included in household collections.
 

Other activities being undertaken as part of Recycle Week include:

  • Two community events to promote recycling at Burgess Park on Monday 22nd June and Morrisons on Walworth Road on Friday 26th June.
  • A Real Nappy workshop at Blue Anchor Library on Monday 22nd June.
  • A school visit to our Recycling Discovery Centre where they will learn about the benefits of recycling through interactive exhibits and tour the Materials Recovery Facility to see how Southwark’s recyclable waste is dealt with.
  • A teacher’s evening at the Recycling Discovery Centre to promote the free waste education offered to local schools.
  • Two tours have been arranged with local community groups to showcase Southwark’s Waste Integrated Management Facility which treats black bag waste and recycling in Southwark.

We would like to encourage everyone to recycle as much as they can, not just during Recycle Week, but every week to help our environment and ensure that recyclable materials are being put to good use.”

Councillor Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for Recycling and Environment, said: “I’m pleased residents have been so supportive of our partnership with Read International and have donated thousands of books to communities in Africa. Recycling can also be beneficial to communities at home, and I hope this Recycle Week encourages more and more local people to do so.”
