Southwark community groups and schools can apply for up to £1,000 to put towards their project, along with the voluntary assistance of Veolia employees who can be on hand to build, clean, paint or plant as needed.
So far the Southwark EnviroGrant scheme has helped over 20 community projects in the borough and awarded over £13,000 to enable these schemes to happen. Projects have included community gardening and composting, plastic bottle greenhouses, educational eco dens for primary schools and much more.
Fabrice Bouchon, general manager for Veolia in Southwark said: “We look forward to supporting more environmental projects this year. Our staff really enjoy getting involved and working with the community and I’m delighted that through EnviroGrant we have been able to support so many worthwhile schemes."
Councillor Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling, Community Safety and Volunteering, said: “The EnviroGrant is a great way for local groups and schools who care about protecting and improving their local community to make a difference. I encourage as many people as possible to apply and get involved with this worthy cause.”
In 2015, Veolia are particularly looking for applications with a strong 3R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) theme. For example, events and projects that:
- Reduce the amount of waste produced - such as cooking demos to encourage use of leftovers or community composting schemes
- Reuse more of the things we throw away - such as ‘Give or Take’ days, Swap Shops, Swishing events or community garden makeovers that upcycle materials for containers or furnishings
- Recycle and reuse more materials - such as community/school clear out days or neighbourhood recycling champion schemes to improve recycling in an area
Organisations or groups can apply for EnviroGrant funding by downloading an application pack online. The deadline for entries is 30 April 2015; for more information please see the EnviroGrant web page.
